The Hard-working Staff Members of our K-4 Cafeteria Kitchen

The head and second cooks start their day at 6:00 am to prepare a healthy breakfast for our students and staff. Our helpers come in anywhere from 7:30 to 9:30 to help prepare lunch and serve. These ladies deserve a lot of thanks for a job well done this year! As we complete our second year in the Community Eligibility Program where all students can eat breakfast and lunch free of charge, we have increased participation by around 30 percent! We are working toward a greater breakfast participation next year as we add more popular items to our menus and encourage students who are tardy to eat breakfast.

…We love our pizza, and we know they do, too!

We make everyone's favorite food a nutritious option. Our pizza starts with a 51% whole grain crust, then we top it with real ingredients-zesty tomato sauce, low fat mozzarella cheese, and reduced fat pepperoni. The result? Well, it's amoré!

30 Weird Facts You Never Knew About Apples

They're sweet, crunchy, and the perfect vehicle for getting peanut butter, chocolate, and cheese into your mouth. What's not to love about apples?While you probably know the fruit's myriad health benefits, odds are you aren't aware of these cool (and very random) apple facts.

1. Apples are actually part of the rose family, just like pears and plums.

2. There are more than 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the U.S. That means if you had apple a day, it would take you nearly seven years to eat each kind.

3. There are more than 7,500 varieties of apples grown around the world. It would take you more than 20 years to try them all if you ate one a day!

4. It takes two pounds of apples to make one nine-inch apple pie.

5. Apples ripen up to 10 times faster when you leave them out then when you refrigerate them.

10/13/16 > Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Time at BGS

9de23ce57cdbbe82aaa543a7195e654c_thumbBGS-47 joined schools, preschools, colleges and inpiduals across the Great Lakes Region states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio in celebrating National Farm to School Month by crunching into golden delicious apples in celebration of the third annual Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch at NOON on Thursday, October 13, 2016!

Students were able to taste test two different varieties of apples with dip and take a taste test survey. Golden Delicious Apples from Flamm's Orchard in Cobden were served at lunch. Apple Coloring books and fun facts were also available for students to take.

This collective crunch encourages healthy eating and supports farm to school and local food initiatives in the Great Lakes Region. By encouraging students to try fresh fruits and vegetables, we hope to promote healthy eating choices among our students.
