Parent Safety Letter from Superintendent

Back to School Parent Letter - Safety Protocols and Upgrades
Posted on 07/25/2018

Dear Parents and Students,

It is my hope this letter finds you healthy, relaxed, and ready for another wonderful school year at Benton #47!  On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration, we are certainly excited and looking forward to seeing all of our students.

The purpose of my letter is to communicate some of the school safety protocols and facility upgrades that have been made over the summer.  As you know, the safety and security of our students and staff remain our highest priority.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where we must discuss and plan for all scenarios no matter how unpleasant it might seem.  As a result, we continue to work with local law enforcement and are committed to doing our very best to sustain a safe and secure learning environment.

Some of the updates we have made throughout the summer to enhance security are as follows:

  • All exterior and interior windows have been secured with 3M bullet resistant film
  • Hired a School Social Worker and Developed a Risk Assessment Team for early intervention of students who display signs of potential risk
  • Partnered with the Benton Police Department allowing for access to a part-time School Resource Officer beginning the first day of school
  • In the process of updating all classroom door hardware with more efficient locking mechanisms
  • Partnered with School Guard 911, a leading school safety app, providing the ability for all district personnel to have a one touch alert system that instantly notifies law enforcement in the event of a school intruder

In addition, I want to communicate some parking updates that will be in effect beginning August 8, the first day of student attendance.  The areas highlighted in red on the map below will no longer be designated as student pick-up areas following student dismissal.  We are now required to keep these areas clear for law enforcement, ambulance, and fire/rescue vehicles.  Each of these areas will be clearly painted and marked as No Parking areas.  In addition, we are currently working to excavate and create additional parking and student pick-up areas on the NE corner of the Collins/Malkovich Event Center.  We are hoping it will be ready for the first day of school.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we attempt to create the safest possible environment for everybody at Benton #47.
